Project 946 was one of four identical gear shaving machines that were rebuilt for a global Fortune 500 company. The project included an electrical upgrade with an Allen-Bradley PLC ControlLogix system and operator interface touch-screen control panel, as well as Kenetix servo motors for the table traverse and lift systems.
A zero-backlash gearbox and servo motor were added to the cutterhead to replace the old AC motor and OEM gearbox, increasing control of the cutter's angular position. This project also included precision machining of the table ways, knee ways, and cross slide.
Final runoff in Kearney was done 23 weeks after receipt of the machine, with in-plant runoff the week following.
